At 4Mile, we pride ourselves on creating an environment where employees feel valued and supported to pursue their personal and professional dreams.
Recently, one of our team members, Jamaya Shearer, took a significant step by relocating from New Zealand to Australia to further his passion for soccer. Thanks to 4Mile’s flexible approach and our established presence in both countries, Jamaya was able to seamlessly continue his employment while pursuing new opportunities abroad.
We sat down with Jamaya to talk about his experience and learn more about his journey. Read more below…
From Agent to Team Leader: Jamaya’s Story at 4Mile
Jamaya’s journey at 4Mile began just over three years ago, juggling shifts as an agent while studying at university. After nearly three years on the phone, his dedication and leadership qualities saw him step into the role of NFP Team Leader in New Zealand last September. Today, he holds the very same position here in Australia – guiding and supporting our not-for-profit (NFP) team with the experience and enthusiasm he’s honed over the years.
Chasing the Dream: Why Soccer Came Calling
For Jamaya, the decision to move wasn’t about geography – it was about football. In New Zealand, the game is largely amateur, but Australia’s larger leagues and semi-professional pathways open up more funding and real possibilities for aspiring professionals like Jamaya. Settling in Sydney, he’s now proudly representing the ACU Football Club, chasing that next level of competition and development.
A Seamless Transition: 4Mile’s Support on the Ground
“When I told Ash about my project, she straight away offered me to work in the same team-leader position over here,” Jamaya recalls. Beyond the paperwork, managers like Ashima checked in on his move, helped him settle in, and even treated him to dinner to watch a football match. According to Jamaya, it’s that extra mile of support that made all the difference.
Stability Across Borders: The Security of a Familiar Role
Moving countries can be costly and complicated, especially when it comes to finances. For Jamaya, knowing the same role was waiting for him in Australia meant he could move without the stress of job hunting. “Having that job security and being able to start a job straight away means I could afford to make the move,” he says. “It wouldn’t have been that easy without 4Mile.”
A Culture That Champions Growth
4Mile’s supportive and fun culture
“The agents are encouraged to reach out with any questions or concerns they might have,” Jamaya explains. “And as a Team Leader, I am always happy to help with whatever the issue may be.” That open-door approach extends beyond work and daily tasks – when Jamaya expressed his desire to move, 4Mile’s leadership backed him immediately. It’s this supportive culture that empowers everyone to reach higher, both professionally and personally.
The little extra that makes 4Mile feel like home
Beyond career support, Jamaya has become a fan of 4Mile’s cooked breakfasts and lunches. He says the cooks here in Australia are “really good” – another small touch that makes a big difference in daily morale.
Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Movers
“Just do it,” Jamaya advises any young professional weighing a big relocation. “Back yourself if you have an opportunity or a passion and go for it! You’ll never know the outcome if you don’t do it.” His confidence comes from living the advice. He seized the chance, and today he’s thriving on the pitch!
Jamaya’s journey is a testament to our core values in action. We believe in putting people first and ensuring our team feels supported in their personal and professional goals – we pride ourselves on providing a great workplace environment and flexible working arrangements to support a better work/life balance.
We wish Jamaya all the best in his exciting new chapter and look forward to seeing him thrive both on and off the field!
